Prickly pears or prickly pears as they are also known, are the fruit of the famous nopales or cactus; although it may seem surprising, the fruits of the cactus are eaten and have many properties. These huge berries of reddish or orange color when ripe, are used in the preparation of juices, jams, natural remedies and even in alcoholic beverages.
They are rich in water, sugars, fiber, vitamins A, C, K and group B, as well as important minerals such as magnesium, iron, calcium, copper and potassium. This fruit is recognized for its anti-inflammatory and antiviral properties, reduces blood sugar levels and bad cholesterol, as well as treating hangover symptoms.
Despite its many benefits, prickly pear has some side effects, which are triggered by certain factors that may not be known to many, and that is what we will talk about below.
Disadvantages and side effects of prickly pear juice
Although cactus juice has many benefits, mentioned above, sometimes it can generate adverse effects, which depending on the person can be serious or not. These effects only occur if there is an abuse in the consumption of this fruit, as well as with other foods and if it is abruptly included in your diet.
The main side effects of prickly pear juice are:
- Mild diarrhea
- Nausea
- Abdominal distention
- Headache
- Increased stool frequency.
- Increased stool volume.
On the other hand, there is another group of reactions or side effects that may occur, but they are very rare. Among these are hypoglycemia (low blood sugar levels), constipation due to consumption of the seeds, allergic reactions such as nasal inflammation and asthma; its consumption is also not recommended for pregnant women, because there are no studies that demonstrate its safety during pregnancy.
However, as always, it is recommended to consult your doctor if this food can cause you any discomfort.
