What is Mesothelioma?
There’s a reason asbestos has been removed from buildings and that reason is mesothelioma. It is exactly as it sounds – a form of cancer. While it can occur other ways, most of the time, asbestos is to blame. It is a rare cancer that can affect anyone and, as far as cancers go, while it isn’t as famous as others, it can be just as deadly.
What is Mesothelioma?
If you want to know what is mesothelioma, here it is – it is a rare cancer that targets and affects a rarely-mentioned thin layer of cells around the body’s internal organs called the mesothelium. There are three ways that this mesothelioma can manifest: 1) pleural mesothelioma, 2) peritoneal mesothelioma, and 3) pericardial mesothelioma.
One of the more worrying mesothelioma facts is that symptoms can occur far, far into the future from initial exposure to asbestos, which can delay diagnosis and eat up critical time.
Asbestos
The most basic of mesothelioma facts is that most cases are in large part due to the presence of asbestos. Due to exposure or ingestion, asbestos can cause internal inflammation which can provoke development of the cancer. Sadly, asbestos was largely used in the twentieth century. Mesothelioma sufferers largely revolved around that injury, people who worked on asbestos as makers or as installers and handlers. Even sadder is the fact that some companies recklessly insisted on using the item despite proof that it causes cancer.
Naval vessels and areas in particular were rife with asbestos. This has lead to a number of navy veterans developing mesothelioma late in their lives. Ships apparently had asbestos everywhere in them. Engine and boiler rooms as well as sleeping quarters were simply saturated with the carcinogen.
Mesothelioma Treatment
Treating it is as difficult as any cancer. Frank and active discussion between a patient and the physician is vital as mesothelioma requires a lifestyle change, it is a condition that probably will never leave. As with any cancer, there are various breakthroughs being made every day that can provide an increased quality of life and, perhaps even, repressing its progression enough that it doesn’t change more than it already did.

It is important to surround oneself with support during this difficult time, as a patient’s outlook of life can affect both their judgment and indirectly influence their health.
A Difficult Issue
Cancer is no joke and despite the relative rarity of mesothelioma, it’s just as deadly as brain or pancreatic cancer. There is no real cure or treatment for cancer, as well as no real vaccine to it. News of cancer is devastating for everyone involved as it changes the lives of the patients and their loved ones. It is always a tragedy.
Of course, it is not without hope. Cancer can be fought, can be beaten. People don’t have to wilt under bone cancer and you don’t have to wilt under mesothelioma.
